AZ Ameublement workshop: a bench covered with drawings, carved ornaments and veneer samples, marquetry panels against the walls and a bombé commode in progress

The House

A family house of fine cabinetmaking

AZ Ameublement is a family house of fine cabinetmaking whose savoir-faire has been handed down since the middle of the twentieth century — restoring period furniture, marquetry, carving and bespoke creation.

Timeline

The time of the House

  1. Curved occasional table staged beside a bed

    Mid-twentieth century

    The first gestures

The workshop began around a bench and a few hand tools. Chair restoration, veneer repair, early period furniture: the craft was learned piece by piece.

  2. Geometric rosette coffee table staged in a living room

    Transmission

From one generation to the next

The savoir-faire is handed down at the bench, through gestures repeated and corrected. Marquetry, ornamental carving and traditional finishes gradually joined the House's repertoire.

  3. Ivory dressing table presented in a soft-toned bedroom

    Today

    One House, two temporalities

The atelier restores furniture that deserves to last and creates pieces that deserve to be passed on. The same hands, the same standards, serving heritage and creation alike.

Generations

What is handed down at the bench

The apprenticeship

The House's craft goes back to the 1930s, when Mr Zouine entered cabinetmaking. From the masters of his time he learned less a trade than a way of looking: recognising a species, reading the grain, understanding the figure, judging how a board has dried.

The mastery

Wood is not an inert material: it moves, reacts, and works with the humidity of the room it will live in. The cabinetmaker does not impose a shape — he first learns the one the material will accept. Joints become exact, veneers refined, the finish deeper.

The handing down

Mr Zouine passed on more than tools to his children: he passed on a discipline of time. The Zouine family now uses contemporary means wherever they add precision, and keeps the hand wherever only the hand gives a piece its character.
